CPS board votes to remove Wayne Sells' name from Rock Bridge football field
COLUMBIA - The Columbia Public Schools Board of Education voted Thursday to remove Wayne Sells' name from the football field at Rock Bridge High School.
The board said it will not look at renaming the field at this time.
Rock Bridge named the field 'Wayne Sells Family Activity Field' after he gave the school money for stadium improvements.
In mid-September, the board said it might consider renaming the field after Sells posted on social media about protests at NFL games. The board said it objected to the profane language in the post.
"The content of the post is not representative of the values of Rock Bridge High School, Columbia Public Schools or of the Columbia Board of Education," spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said in an e-mail.
Sells later apologized for the post and wrote to the school board, asking that his name be removed from the Rock Bridge field.
In an email from CPS Community Relations Director, Michelle Baumstark, said, "The overall sentiment expressed by Board members this morning conveyed that despite the racist tone of the post, Mr. Sells’ apology was accepted".
